While usually best practices are focused on. It can be equally useful to consider the anti-patterns or ‘worst practices’ that might get you into trouble if not you’re not careful.

Over the last decade Gartner has had a list of the top 13 worst Enterprise Architecture practices that can often lead to businesses headaches. Here is the list:

  1. Failure to link business strategy with business goals
  2. Confusion of technical architecture with Enterprise Architecture (EA)
  3. Too much focus on the existing architecture
  4. Too much governance and assurance
  5. Too many standards
  6. Too much focus on EA theory rather than business goals
  7. Unwillingness to be flexible when applying EA frameworks
  8. Appling EA in a too academic way
  9. Lack of frequent communication
  10. Limiting the EA team members to only IT members
  11. Lack of key performance metrics
  12. Using an EA tool that doesn’t match the business use cases
  13. Not recognizing that EA is a continuous process
