GPS and IoT: A Combination for Innovation

The inclusion of location and spatial information with other data collected by IoT devices can add significant value. GPS location information provides important tracking information. GPS and IoT are complementary technologies that can be used to build innovative products.

Real-time data about objects and hardware can be collected by IoT devices and GPS adds value by specifying the physical location of the IoT device when the data is collected. The combination of GPS coordinates with real-time data is useful for applications like asset tracking and verification, wearable technology, intelligent traffic, and autonomous vehicles.

Location information can often significantly improve customer experience. During COVID-19, GPS and IoT have been combined to create applications like virtual queues, curbside pickup, and reservation check-in.

George Hardesty, Principal at Data Alliance, said that “when paired with¬†¬†IoT, GPS provides the ability to quantify and record large amounts of data pertaining to time, location, speed and direction.”
