Data Catalogs: Speeding Compliance and Discovery while Unlocking Insight into Data Utilization

By Dick Weisinger

Data catalogs are data management and search tools applied to metadata. Data may be stored in data warehouses, data lakes, the cloud, applications, and data repositories. Catalogs help users organize, access, search, and track information quickly across applications and repositories. It is particularly useful for discovery, governance, and compliance use cases.

Data catalogs enable the following kinds of actions:

  • data discovery and relationships with other data
  • data organization and governance
  • data annotation

More recently AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities are being built into data catalogs. This new generation of ML data catalogs is branded as MLDC by analysts like Forrester and Gartner. AI can classify, identify patterns, and profile data, and it is particularly useful for automating the identification of data and relationships between data that originated from different sources.
