Global Devices: Increasing Number of Productivity Devices
It’s not just the number of IoT devices that’s sky-rocketing, the number of devices that connect humans to the internet is steadily rising, especially during the pandemic over the past 18 months.
A report by Gartner found that the number of devices like PCs, workstations, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones will reach 6.2 billion in 2021. It is forecast to increase an additional 3.2 percent in 2022 to 6.4 billion units.

Ranjit Atwal, senior research director at Gartner, said that “the COVID-19 pandemic has permanently changed device usage patterns of employees and consumers. With remote work turning into hybrid work, home education changing into digital education, and interactive gaming moving to the cloud, both the types and number of devices people need, have and use will continue to rise. Connectivity is already a pain-point for many users who are working remotely. But as mobility returns to the workforce, the need to equip employees able to work anywhere with the right tools, will be crucial. Demand for connected 4G/5G laptops and other devices will rise as business justification increases.”
