Storage: VC Money Flows to Big Data and Storage Start ups

By Dick Weisinger

2009 was a bad year for VC monies flowing into new startups.  Some analysts warn that 2011 and 2012 will be years short on innovation since the pipeline leading up to innovative new products dried up beginning in the fall of 2008.

VC activity is still pretty muted, but there are a couple of areas that are seeing dollar investments:  Big Data and Storage.  The explosive trajectory of data growth, both structured and unstructured, in both business and consumer sectors are creating the interest in these areas.  Om Malik reports examples of some companies that are seeing VC investment monies:

Scale Computing  –  $9 million.  Sells midmarket clustered storage solutions
Pivot3 — $25 million.   Sells virtual servers and scalable storage.

RainStor — $7.5 million.  Structured data backups.
