AI-Augmented Software Development: Love it or Hate it, It’s Here!
Artificial Intelligence is starting to be applied to software development to both improve development and improve the developer experience.
Tools like Microsoft’s IntelliSense have been available for some time. Based on near-term context of code that the developer has typed, these tools have been able to suggest possible function names and provide guidance about parameters and data types. Auto-suggest is a useful feature and a major reason why some developers like to use IDEs, although they have been fairly limited in their functionality.
IntelliSense has been made to be even smarter. Microsoft now offers IntelliCode which expands auto-suggest to include things like argument completion and auto-formatting based on existing code style. IntelliCode is great to help with global refactoring changes that need to be made, and can highlight potential bugs and problems in in the developer’s code.
Now AI is taking things even further. AI-based development tools like Copilot, which is based on code by OpenAI, takes coding assistance to another level and is able to create blocks of code based on context or directives. The advanced capability has been received with mixed reviews. Copilot has been often compared to a pair-programming buddy (hence its name), but it has also been disparaged by detractors as producing poor code quality, likely replicating or creating bugs from code that it was trained on, and not respecting the licenses of the original code from which it was trained.
David Schatsky, Managing Director at Deloitte, told Forbes that “for the most part, these AI tools are helping and augmenting humans, not replacing them. These tools are helping to democratize coding and software development, allowing individuals not necessarily trained in coding to fill talent gaps and learn new skills. There is also AI-driven code review, providing quality assurance before you even run the code. AI supports humans throughout the software development lifecycle. As with most automation, AI here accelerates the work.”
