Enterprise Architecture: MACH Architecture for Scalable and Pluggable Solutions

Twenty years ago the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) framework was the cutting-edge approach to developing web-based apps. LAMP is now an acronym and development framework that was superseded by solutions stacks/frameworks like MEAN (MongoDB, Express.js, AngularJS (or Angular), and Node.js) and many others, including Jamstack and MERN.

An approach for building dynamic environments, especially for e-commerce is the architectural style called MACH (Microservices, API-First, Cloud-Native, Headless). It’s an approach that enables web-based solutions that are easily scalable and pluggable.

Tim McMillen said that “retailers, manufacturers, and FMCG businesses should be aware that MACH transformation is not straightforward and cannot happen overnight. Its adoption, however, is the only way forward to achieve a truly agile and scalable digital capability that can facilitate the rate of change and experience innovation that businesses will need in order to keep up… Thanks to the development of this architecture, it’s now possible to place the experiential element of e-commerce ahead of the technical requirements, and this opens up fantastic opportunities”

In 2020 a consortium of companies formed the MACH alliance to help invest in and grow the use of MACH implementations. Now more than sixty members belong to the alliance. Sonja Keerl, MACH Alliance Co-Founder & President, said that “the four MACH principles are the recipe for open, pluggable, future-proof technology ecosystems. Through its work and certification program, the Alliance is educating companies about how to adopt new composable architectures that by nature connect, scale, and adapt quickly to serve customers anywhere, any time.”
