Records Management: Paper Records Slow to Die
An AIIM survey on the use of records management in organizations in 2009 found explosive growth in the volume of electronic records being used, but somewhat surprisingly found little drop off in the use of paper records. Paper remains at a fairly constant level.
A recent survey by the company Version One confirmed that paper in many places is still very much alive and well. The surprising fact about the results is that the survey was taken among IT professionals. 86 percent of IT personnel said that they still remain dependent on paper records in their work. And 51 percent said that the dependency was a very strong one.
Julian Buck, author of the report, commented that “It is astonishing that so many IT professionals still rely heavily on paper documents.”
32 percent said that an Electronic Document Management system would make them more productive. 48 percent still worry though about security as related to electronic records — and we’re just talking electronic records, not necessarily ones stored in the cloud. 20 percent said that they would be convinced to move to electronic records if they could be assured that electronic records could be legally defensible.
