Security: Risks of Emerging Technologies go Underestimated
Emergent technologies like mobile computing, cloud computing, and social media are risky propositions that are not being properly monitored at many companies according to a report by Ernst and Young. And it isn’t because companies are unaware that these new technologies pose risks. As many as 60 percent of high-ranking executives at large corporations say that these technologies are potential security risks, yet many companies have not yet begun to actively work to minimize the risks from using the new technologies.
When it comes to security, executives show more worry about problems caused by their own employees compared to the risk of external unauthorized access to their infrastructure. 92 percent say that employees aren’t sufficiently conscious of security to assist in proactively keeping company data safe. 52 percent of executives say that their biggest problem with data leaks are coming from the use of personal devices that employees connect to the enterprise IT infrastructure. While 53 percent say that mobile workers are a major cause of data security problems.
64 percent of executives cite data security as one of their top IT security priorities. Organizations do see the risk and companies are beginning to be more proactive in minimizing the risks. 50 percent are spending more on data lost and data leak prevention techniques. Many organizations are becoming interested in shifting to cloud computing and 85 percent say that some method to be able to certify and quantify the level of risk involved with cloud computing vendors could ease their security concerns about cloud computing. A method of measuring cloud vendor security could go a long way in helping customers begin to trust the cloud more and to be able to pick quality vendors.
