Technology: Top Trends that will shape 2012
In October, Gartner announced the top technology trends that it saw will drive the technical events of 2012. The trend list was presented by David Cearley, Distinguished Analyst & Gartner Fellow at Gartner. Cearley said that the over-arching trend is the “digitization of everything”.
Human Experience
1 Media Tablets and wide variety of new form factors
2 Mobile-centric applications. Increasingly touch, gesture, search and voice will replace windows, icons, menus and pointers. Use of HTML5 to build web-based applications instead applications based on native platforms will become more commonplace.
3 Context and Social-aware applications. Based on your location and previous social interactions, applications will become smarter, knowing who you are and where you currently are.
Business Experience
4 Internet of Things (IoT). The Internet will become more highly interconnected with devices, including sensors, mobile devices and smart buildings.
5 App Stores and Marketplaces. Both consumer and enterprise on-line marketplaces will become commonplace. Gartner predicsts that 70 billion mobile apps will be downloaded in 2014.
6 Analytics. Real-time complex analytics that includes structure, unstructured and social information will become more widely used for collaboration and decision making. Analytics will also be used for simulation, prediction and optimization.
IT Department Experience
7 Big Data. The amount of data continues to increase. It will be increasingly difficult to build single data warehouses — logical data warehouses that can access data from multiple sources will become increasingly necessary.
8 In-Memory Computing. The use of flash memory will increase in both consumer devices and in IT systems. Embedded memory provides the advantage of minimized space and heat requirements, more rugged and higher performance.
9 Low-Engergy Green Servers. For some applications,low-power processors that consume very little power will take over some tasks that have non-intensive computing requirements
