Big Data: Analytics Backbone for the Internet of Things (IoT)

Refrigerators that can report their food-stock inventory, thermostats that self-regulate based on your habits and routines, basements that tweet you when they flood.  These are the kinds of things that an emerging technology called the Internet of Things (IoT) is promising to enable.  And these three examples are all things that are already available as ‘early-adopter’ products today.

Interconnecting devices with people and other devices via the internet is just one branch of an areas being called  Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Machine-to-Machine-to-Human (M2M2H) communication.

One area where IoT is increasingly being applied is with smart buildings.  IDC Energy Insights estimates that the global Smart Building market was $3.1 billion in 2010 and is expected to grow to $10.2 billion by 2015.

An IBM report on Smart Technologies in buildings said that “buildings consume 42 percent of all energy worldwide; energy costs represent about 30 percent of a building’s total operating cost— up to 50 percent of energy and water are often wasted. By 2025, buildings will be the number one consumer of energy in the world. ”  One of the goals of smart buildings to to better regulate their consumption of energy.

IBM has started an initiative called Smarter Buildings and they see a growing demand for smarter buildings and cities.
Dave Bartlett, Vice President at IBM, made five predictions about how this technology will affect us.
  • Whole neighborhoods will become smarter. Everything from power consumption to traffic patterns will be monitored, tracked and analyzed to enable greater efficiencies.
  • Buildings will become more transparent in their resource usage. Energy, temperatures, water, and even things like parking will all be monitored to better enable efficiencies.
  • Proliferation of sensors. More and more types of objects and systems will be hooked up to the internet to enable monitoring.
  • Building owner will have greater selection when choosing energy sources. They’ll be able to select energy sources a variety of factors and parameters, like carbon emissions.
  • Greater transparency in building costs. Building costs are typically one of an organization’s largest expenses.

Big Data analytic technologies are having a direct impact on the progress and usability of IoT projects.  A common theme of IoT implementations is the installations of many sensors and the collection of huge amounts of data from the internet for analysis.  The field of IoT can be expected to only grow and improve in the future as Big Data analytic tools improve.
