Cloud Computing: Public Cloud Adoption by Enterprises is a Near-Term Inevitability
Cost reduction is the top IT priority for CIOs over the next twelve months. Complexity reduction is their top strategy for achieving savings. That’s according to a study sponsored by BMC and conducted by Forrester Research.
The Forrester report synthesized the following data after surveying a group of CIOs:
- 81 percent of CIOs say that creating a comprehensive cloud computing strategy over the next year is a high priority for them
- 58 percent of CIOs say that they currently have mission-critical applications running in the public cloud
- 91 percent of CIOs say that their plan is to move some portion of their computing environment into the public cloud within the next two years
- 79 percent of CIOs say that in the next two years that their companies will be running mission-critical applications in the public cloud services
- 72 percent of CIOs think that business views the cloud as a way to bypass IT
- 71 percent of CIOs feel that IT should be responsible for managing public cloud services
Mark Settle, CIO of BMC software, said that “It’s universally recognized in the industry that hybrid Cloud management is going to be a core competency of the successful IT shop or company in the 2015 time frame. People that keep trying to do everything on their own inside the firewall are going to pay a penalty from both a cost and agility perspective… Companies that want to be able to leap at opportunities around leveraging mobile applications and can protect themselves from an information security point of view are really going to become adapted, they’re going to use third-party resources to accelerate time to market and new capabilities.”
