Collaboration: Mobile Technology and Remote Workers on the Rise
Workers are increasingly doing more of their work remotely, and the trend is only accelerating as mobility and video conference technologies improve. Virtual collaboration refers to the people working together on solving a problem but without face-to-face interaction.
Virtual collaboration has become a top priority for businesses of all sizes. Workers cite time savings, increased productivity and the opportunity to better focus on their work as the top three benefits of remote collaboration. The minuses of working remotely include not being able to directly talk with co-workers, restricted data accessibility, and the reduced understanding of the activities of co-workers. Andrew Filev, CEO of Wrike, the company that conducted the virtual collaboration survey, said that “Technology can make virtual teams just as efficient as if they were collaborating in the same office. ”
The Wrike survey also found that:
- 43 percent say that the amount of virtual collaboration which they do now has increased from the level of two or three years ago.
- 50 percent say that they now spend more time working remotely from their office
- 25 percent say that they expect their company to completely shift to working virtually within the next twenty-four months
Collaboration is important to human progress. Charles Darwin is often quoted as having said that “It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”
