Storage and Archival: Cloud Storage Popular for Backup, DR and Archival
Businesses recognize the importance of secure and reliable data storage, and as businesses factor in parameters like cost, convenience, and redundancy, increasingly they are choosing to store at least part of their total data in the cloud. In fact, 44 percent of businesses say that they are actively using cloud storage. And, as reported by Rich Castagna for TechTarget’s SearchCloudStorage, that number appears to be growing rapidly as 46 percent of current users say that they are increasing their usage of cloud data storage services.
Cloud storage users appear to be relatively happy with their decision. 17 percent say that their experience with cloud storage has been “outstanding”. 59 percent say their experience has been “good”, and only 3 percent say that the use of cloud storage has been a disappointment.
Of those businesses using cloud storage, the primary applications are the following:
- 58 percent – Backup
- 52 percent – Collaboration/File Sharing
- 38 percent – Disaster Recovery
- 28 percent – Archive
What kind of data do businesses want to archive? In the 2012 Data Archiving Study by Rimage, the following category of documents were cited as important document requiring long term storage:
- 66.1 percent – Financial Records
- 65.3 percent – Medical Records
- 53.2 percent – Legal Documents
- 50 percent – Corporate Secrets
