Workflow: Does Streamlining the Process Save Money?

By Dick Weisinger

Everyone agrees that technologies like ECM, BPM, Document Management and Workflow streamline processes. They’re clearly saving time and increasing efficiency, but putting a dollar figure on exactly what that savings is can be eluding.

A report written by research manager Cliff Mills of UK-based PMP Research called “Road to an Information Strategy” found just that. PMP Research made a recent survey of mid and large-sized UK companies.

26% of the companies responded that estimating ROI of these technologies is ‘very difficult’, and 32% said that it is ‘difficult’. Only 4% said estimating ROI was ‘easy’ and none of the companies said that it was ‘very easy’.

When asked what the biggest challenges organizations are facing in implementing BPM, ROI topped all others by a wide margin. All of the responses were as follows:

  • 65% — Difficulty in producing clear ROI
  • 48% — Integrating with other Enterprise Applications
  • 35% — Need for Change Management Program
  • 30% — Software not flexible enough to support desired way of working
  • 26% — User Acceptance
  • 22% — Poor Scalability or Performance issues
  • 9% — Other
  • 4% — Don’t Know
