Cloud Computing: Slashed Budgets and Increased Storage Demands Challenge IT Managers

By Dick Weisinger

Managers of IT departments told Navisite in a recent survey on Cloud Computing that their biggest challenges now include:

  • How to build a cloud strategy
  • How to deal with slashed budgets
  • How to handle the storage of huge amounts of data
  • How to secure their data

50 percent of those same managers said that it was critical for them to be able to know where their data resides.  75 percent said that they currently store data in two or more locations. 41 percent said that they store data in four or more geographic locations.  About one-fifth of organizations are spending more than a quarter of their IT budget on storage, while 46 percent said that their storage spending is somewhere between 11 and 25 percent of the IT budget.

The Navisite report concludes by saying that “For many companies, scalable, dynamic, accessible, and secure data storage is no longer a tempting alternative solution; it is quickly cementing its place as a fundamental business requirement.”
