Small Business Technology: Small Businesses Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks
Small businesses today are rapidly adopting new-technology gadgets and widgets, often at a pace comparatively faster than larger businesses.
Siamak Farah, CEO of InfoStreet, said that “The cloud is famous for ‘anytime, anywhere’ access on any device. While, today, this access is a lifeline for many small businesses, the cloud also brings a ton more to small businesses, enabling them to flourish and compete with the big names.”
Small businesses have been quick to adopt technology platforms and gadgets like cloud computing, smart phones, tablets and high-speed Internet. Most small businesses have a web-site presence and 20 percent have created a mobile presence. 60 percent of small businesses today allow their employees to telecommute. That’s up from 44 percent three years ago.
But the downside to small businesses and technology is that it is all too easy for smaller businesses to not allocate sufficient resources and they lack sufficient knowledge to combat and secure their businesses against cyber threats. A study made by the National Small Business Association, for example, found that 52 percent of small business owners consider security their biggest issue and worry when it comes to technology, up from 42 percent last year.
Molly Brogan, the director of communications for the NSBA, said that “small businesses may not be as tech savvy [as larger companies], or they don’t have the staff to provide for a full-time IT person” for helping them to manage and secure their technology investments. The NSBA report found that, on average, small businesses lose about $8699 each time they become victim of a cyber attack, and about half of all small businesses have been the victim of a cyber attack.
