Open Source: Enterprise usage to double in three years
Open Source has claimed about 10 percent of all enterprise software used today, and that number is expected to be 15 to 20 percent by 2010. Those are the results of a recent study by Saugatuck Technology. And, as a result, traditional software vendors can expect to see their own numbers continue to shrink.
The study found that:
According to a Saugatuck survey:
- 25% of enterprises “always consider and evaluate open source alternatives when planning to acquire new systems, applications, databases or software tools.”
- 40% frequently consider open source alternatives
- 50% widely use open source within their enterprises.
- 60% think that open source adds significant business value
Enterprises are gravitating towards open source because:
- It’s free or low cost
- All the code is available to customize as needed
- Removes dependence on proprietary technology
Saugatuck suggests that commercial vendors are slowly being hit with the realization that their models are going to have to change, and if they don’t, competing in a world against open source will grow increasingly more difficult.
