Cloud Computing: Cloud-Wary Versus the Cloud-Wise Organizations
A recent survey by Internap, a vendor specializing in high-performance cloud infrastructure, categorized and compared the opinions of two distinct groups: the cloud-wary, or those organizations that haven’t used cloud computing, and the cloud-wise, organizations that are using cloud computing.
The survey found that 40 percent of cloud-wary businesses expressed concern over cloud security, while only 15 percent of the cloud-wise businesses had similar concerns. Their conclusion from the survey results was that once businesses gain first-hand experience with the technology their concerns diminish. Although the fact that cloud-wise businesses are already using the cloud implies that those companies already had already come to terms at least to some extent with cloud security.
The top cloud challenges among the cloud-wise group include the following:
- Performance (30 percent)
- Cost at scale (28 percent)
- Reliability (22 percent)
- Compliance (16 percent)
- Security (15 percent)
- Limited Configuration (15 percent)
In the case of cloud applications analyzing big data, 59 percent of the cloud-wise worried about performance issues.
Gopala Tumuluri, vice president of hosted services at Internap, said that “the survey data clearly indicates that big data applications – such as those that enable personalization and targeting through customer insights, social analytics and location mapping – are pushing the performance limits of virtual public cloud environments at price-points that don’t make business sense.”
