Cloud Computing and Security: SAML ID security Method of Choice for the Cloud
Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) is an XML standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between security domains.
A report by identity management tools specialist OneLogin found that:
- 97 percent of SaaS vendors say that they back SAML
- 67 percent of vendors surveyed are using SAML for single-sign-on identity management and 19 percent said that they planned to support SAML within the next year.
- Reasons that vendors give as to why they’ve adopted SAML include strong demand for SAML from their customers, improved security, and the ability to more quickly integrate among cloud application ecosystems with SAML.
- 37 percent of SaaS vendors said that they had mobile applications that were SAML-capable and 25 percent said that they’re using SAML with non-browser desktop applications.
Jim Reavis, CEO of the Cloud Security Alliance, said that “as enterprises adopt more and more cloud-based applications, they need to be able to provision and deprovision both apps and users fast enough to keep up with business requirements, while maintaining tight security and compliance through identity management… SAML is quickly gaining momentum as the standard of choice for SaaS vendors looking to meet their customers’ demands for applications already architected for quick, easy provisioning and secure single sign-on.”
