File Sync and Share (FSS): Organizations Prefer Private Cloud Options
Two-thirds of organizations say that when it comes to managing their documents, records and files, that they prefer to keep that data within private cloud storage rather than to jump to public cloud SaaS offerings like Box or DropBox. The numbers are even higher for organizations that have more than 10,000 employees. That’s according to a report by CTERA Networks.
Part of the reason why organizations aren’t keen on using the public cloud for storing their data is likelihood that data stored there will be leaked. 31 percent of organizations say that data stored in public SaaS systems has been leaked. 71 percent of organizations say that they’re very concerned about the possibility of data breaches that could result when data is stored in the public cloud. 55 percent of organizations have gone so far as to strictly forbid the use of SaaS-based File Sync and Share (FSS) solutions.
25 percent of organizations already have cloud File Sync and Share tools, and another 45 percent of organizations are considering their use.
Michael Osterman, president, Osterman Research, said that “Corporate IT faces a tremendous challenge from any FSS app that does not satisfy enterprise requirements for data protection and IT control over corporate content. Until IT can once again regain control of their data, they risk serious regulatory, governance and security issues.”
The CTERA report also found that 20 percent of organizations are implementing cloud storage gateways, and 38 percent are considering their use. Cloud storage gateways are hardware appliances or software that enable the storing data in the cloud without the need to dramatically change existing infrastructure.
