ECM: Enterprises Reaching Out With Social Networking
Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn are hot now. But new technology is slow in pentrating the enterprise. Slow, but it is happening… Unfortunately all too often it is usually happening in a way that is out of control of IT.
There are some exceptions though where enterprises are embracing new technologies, not fighting them. Take for example Serena Software where Facebook was adopted as a primary corporate tool for communication among their 800 global employees spread out over 18 countries. The idea is that when employees can combine their professional and personal lives they ultimately build stronger business
relationships.
Open-source ECM leader Alfresco is tuned into the need to merge the functions of traditional enterprise software with social networking. The upcoming release of Alfresco will an include an integration Facebook. But not only Facebook, they are rolling out integrations with the iGoogle portal, MediaWiki, and other social networks like Google’s Open Social framework and with Adobe’s Flex2 development tools.
“Our new ECM-enabled access to Facebook lets an organization take the latest news or catalog information from inside the corporation and easily publish it both internally and externally to keep stakeholders informed,” said John Newton, Alfresco chief technology officer.
“We’re on the verge of a massive change in enterprise computing and a lot of it has to do with social computing,” said Newton. “At the moment, content management is used by maybe 10 per cent of the organisation but as that becomes 70 to 80 per cent, it has to change.”
The Alfresco/Facebook integration will allow companies to securely collaborate and publish content on the Facebook site and make the documents available on the Facebook news feed. It also allows companies to audit the usage of the uploaded content to track each item’s popularity.
