Cloud Computing and Security: More than Half of Sensitive Data Stored in the Cloud goes Unencrypted

By Dick Weisinger

The storage of sensitive data in the cloud is something that’s inevitable, say a majority of 4000 IT professionals.  More than half of those organizations actually are already using the cloud to store some amount of sensitive or confidential data.  Half say that whether sensitive data is stored in the cloud or on-premise doesn’t matter much in terms of their security risk profile.  Only 11 percent of organizations say that they have no plans to avoid the cloud for storing sensitive data.

Larry Ponemon, founder of the Ponemon Institute, said that “there are still concerns that many organizations continue to believe that their cloud providers are solely responsible for protecting their sensitive data even though the majority of respondents claim not to know what specific security measures their cloud provider is taking.

Richard Moulds, vice president of strategy at Thales e-Security, said that “encryption is the most widely proven method to secure sensitive data in the enterprise and in the cloud, and yet more than half of respondents report that sensitive data in the cloud goes unprotected… Those that are using encryption have adopted a variety of deployment strategies but once again a universal pain point is key management.  Very often, the way that keys are managed makes all the difference with poor implementations dramatically reducing effectiveness and driving up costs.”

Tim Bramble, director of product management at AFORE, said that “the trouble, and where things fall down is with the key management.  In encryption systems, key management is the number-one thing. If your key is under your doormat…it doesn’t matter if you have 15 locks.”
