Alfresco: A Billion-Document Benchmark in 2008?
Alfresco 1.4 system was benchmarked in 2006 against a system with 10 million documents. At that time the benchmark was made against a dual-processor, dual-core 2.6 MHz Opteron system with 12 GigaBytes.
Reasonable hardware, but not really “enterprise class”. But the numbers were impressive. At that time, even with that system, most operations performed within subsecond response times. And document checkins were clocked at a rate of 64 documents per second.
Now, two years later, Unisys has answered the question of whether Alfresco can handle 100 million documents, and if so, what kind of system setup and tweaks are needed to make it happen. Earlier this week Unisys announced the results of a tests with Alfresco 2.2 using a Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Server. The results are interesting and speak well of Alfresco. Interesting because the results were achieved with no special attempts to optimize the configuration for best results.
• Total number of documents stored:
- 107 million
• Documents loaded per second
- 140 documents per second
• Response time for document operations
- The system scaled well with no noticable degradation
• Processor utilization
- average of approximately 20 percent on the application
server and 15 percent on the database server
The low utilization on the application and database server is a surprise given the size and volume of information.
The results were achieved with basically an “out-of-the-box” installation.
The Unisys team was happy with their results and are now considering what it will take to create a billion-document system. A goal that even just attempting it would have seemed somewhat astounding not too long ago. The Unisys team is also investigating if they can tune upwards the number of documents loaded per second using this configuration. Pretty good for Open Source.
Alfresco is now used at more than 300 customers, including the American Stock Exchange, Boise Cascade, Christian Science Monitor, Informa and the Nebraska State Legislature.
Formtek is an Alfresco Gold-level Integration partner.
