January has been a down month for the market — even yesterday’s slew of tech merger announcements couldn’t reverse the trend: two acquisitions by Oracle, and one that has serious implications for Oracle.

Oracle purchased BEA software for $8.5 billion. Ellison commented that “BEA products will significantly enhance and extend Oracle’s Fusion middleware software suite…customers can choose among Oracle and BEA’s middleware products, knowing that those products will gracefully interoperate and be supported for years to come.”

Oracle yesterday also purchased Captovation, a leading supplier of ECM scan capture solutions, for an undisclosed amount. This fills in a void in Oracle’s ECM blueprint for scan capture.
The most interesting announcement of the day though was Sun’s agreement to purchase MySQL for $1 billion. This move may ultimately make things more difficult for Oracle. Oracle had been trying to align closely with Linux, but MySQL currently has a tight grip on applications hosted on Open-Source Linux.
