Cloud Computing: Cloud Transforms Shop Floor Manufacturing
“A central force in manufacturing innovation is the emergence of cloud technology,” is the conclusion of a white paper by Plex called The State of Manufacturing Technology.
The report found that “the ability to connect and manage all the resources on the shop floor has a dramatic impact on virtually every aspect of manufacturing…Not only do respondents see improvements in information and process flows, but they recognize that the cloud has directly enabled improvements in product quality.”
Manufacturers responding to the Plex report said that:
- 90 percent say that moving to the cloud has had no impact on data security or even improved it
- 74 percent say that using the cloud has enabled them to achieve operating improvements
- 61 percent say that cloud technology has enabled them to achieve better quality in their products
- 40% percent say that cloud technology is an essential element for their plans to innovate over the next five years
- 66 percent say that the cloud has improved their business insight
- 93 percent say that as part of their manufacturing operations they are using consumer tablets.
Jerry Foster, chief technology officer for Plex, said that “cloud software, once a low-cost path to plant automation, has become a crucial tool for manufacturers working to capitalize on new technologies, collaborate across the supply chain, gain operational insights, foster innovation and dramatically improve efficiencies throughout the supply chain.”
The three major categories of services are Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
At present, the consumption market of Cloud Computing Stack Layers is concentrated in UK, Germany, France, Benelux, Italy, Spain and Russia. UK is the largest consumption area in the world, which occupied about 25.33% European market in 2016. The following areas are Germany and France.
The leading players in European market are Amazon Web Services, Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, IBM, Google Cloud Platform, SAP, Rackspace, H&P Helion, OVH, Avaya and Oracle, which occupied about 75% market share in 2016.
Cloud Computing Stack Layers is mainly used for two applications: Commercial Use, Public Services, Other. And commercial use was the most widely used type which took up about 70% of the global total in 2016.
