Software Defined Storage: Cloud and Virtualization Spending Trump Big Data
Despite significant hype, very little funding is being set aside for Big Data, Object Storage and OpenStack by businesses, according to a recent survey by Datacore — 2015 The State of Software-Defined Storage. Instead, businesses are funding initiatives like virtualization, private cloud and software-defined storage (SDS).
The Datacore report finds that when considering SDS, the two biggest issues that IT administrators worry about are the effects of virtualized environments on system downtime and application performance.
Highlights of the survey include:
- 52 percent of businesses say that they chose storage virtualization technologies because it allows them to add more storage without disruption
- 53 percent say that less than 10 percent of their storage capacity is flash-based
- 60 percent say that virtualized servers noticeably degrade performance
- 61 percent say that Data centers and IT have become so complex that some amount of automation is needed when managing them
Deni Connor, founding analyst at SSG-NOW, commented on the Datacore survey, saying that “two major surprises jump out at you from the findings. The absence of near term spending on Big Data and Object Storage among the majority of respondents, and the relatively small penetration of flash across these 477 organizations. Not surprising are the rising levels of investments on Software-Defined Storage initiatitives known to offer more immediate payoff.”
