Drones: Identifying Objects in the Sky with LED Light Signatures
There have been more than 650 sightings of unauthorized unmanned drones flying near aircraft so far in 2015 that have been reported to the FAA. The number of incidents has nearly tripled since 2014. Drones have interfered not only with aircraft but have also hampered firefighters battling wildfire blazes.
In order to introduce more accountability, UC Berkeley researchers are investigating a way to more easily identify the owner of drones so that operators can be made more accountable.
The project is called Lightcense. The idea is to attach an array of LED lights on the underside of the drone that would flash a unique pattern of lights as it flies. The light pattern would be a unique identifier for the craft, similar to a license plate. Observers could visually see the color sequence and record it or could capture the code with a device like a camera or smartphone. A law enforcement agency would be able to look up the pattern in a database to identify the owner.
