Fast Data: Cloudera Kudu Enables Fast Analytics and Efficient Updates
First there was Big Data and Hadoop, and now there is Fast Data.
Cloudera’s new open source project Kudu offers fast analytics with efficient updates, combining the best of Hadoop’s HDFS and HBase. The combination of the two enables the creation of a simpler big-data architecture that can perform and do updates within a real-time analytic workload.
Matt Brandwein, Cloudera’s director of product marketing, said that developers using Kudu are able to “integrate data quickly, data that changes, and access that data very quickly for analytics … The problem is, today [before the introduction of Kudu], there isn’t a good storage back end for them to do that.”
Baoqiu Cui, chief architect at Xiaomi and early adopter of Kudu, said that “our infrastructure team has been working with Kudu, taking advantage of its unique ability to support columnar scans and fast inserts and updates to continue to expand our Hadoop ecosystem footprint. Using Kudu, alongside interactive SQL tools like Impala, has allowed us to build a next-generation data analytics platform for real-time analytics and online reporting.”
Kudu offers both Java and C++ APIs. Cloudera is also developing an integration with Apache Spark.
