Internet of Things: Software Leading Hardware in IoT Innovation

By Dick Weisinger

Internet of Things (IoT) is predicted to break the $7-trillion mark over next five years.  50 billion new IoT connected devices are expected to go online over the next five years.

According to a new IDC survey, three-quarters of business decision makers have either already deployed IoT or have plans to do so in the next 12 months.

Vernon Turner, senior vice-president at IDC, said that  “momentum continues to grow and … [and IoT is increasingly] seen as strategic to the enterprise.”

Findings from the IDC survey include:

  • Security is a leading challenge for businesses, but even more so are the upfront and ongoing costs of achieving security.
  • Software vendors, rather than hardware vendors, actually were more aggressive in leading IoT in 2015
  • IoT happening “at the edge of the network”, not at the enterprise, will become a requirement that will be difficult to meet with an IoT architecture design

Industries that are showing the most interest in IoT technology are:

  • 72 percent – Health Care
  • 67 percent – Transportation
  • 66 percent – Manufacturing
