Robotic Process Automation (RPA): Automation to Take on Knowledge Worker Tasks

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the elimination of repetitive and menial tasks by software and hardware automation.  The goal is to free up workers from mundane activities to do tasks that require decision making and innovation.  RPA is expected to affect about 6-8 percent of the Business Process Management market by 2017 — currently RPA spending accounts for less than 1 percent of that market, according to a report by the Everest Group.

Ankur Kothari, Automation Anywhere Co-Founder, said that “deploying a digital workforce in BPM creates a tremendous opportunity for business transformation with RPA.  By leveraging cognitive-capable robotic process automation (RPA) technology — which enables the deployment of software bots — companies can automate knowledge work of any type within days, streamlining processes and eliminating potential for error, among a host of other benefits. This discussion will undoubtedly provide a clear picture of the future workforce, and will give business leaders a good deal to ponder as they consider their own transformative strategies.”

Cliff Justice, a partner at KPMG, says that there are three classes of RPA technology:

  • Basic Process Automation — this includes macros and scripts, screen scraping, and business workflow
  • Enhanced Process Automation — these are natural language processing that can understand unstructured data and process automation
  • Automatic and Cognitive Platforms – the ability to parse context and understand meaning

In the area of accounting, the Everest report estimates that RPA can result in cost savings as high as 60-67 percent.  A report by McKinsey Global is even more optimistic in how quickly RPA technologies will advance.   The McKinsey report predicts that over the next ten years that work currently being done by 110 to 140 knowledge workers will be transitioned to cognitive RPA systems.

    Smokin hot stuff! You’ve trimmed my dim. I feel as bright and fresh as your prolific website and blogs!

    I am working with an automation testing company which provides manual. I have worked on automating web and mobile applications and most commonly used tools are “Selenium”, “Testcomplete”, “Watir”, “Appium” and “Calabash”. All these have some specific characteristics and few are mentioned as below:
    Web automation tools:
    • Selenium: It automates browsers, hence enabling users to sail through various browser-specific testing purposes.
    • TestComplete: It provides record and playback feature and creates re-usable, robust and automated tests for Silverlight applications.
    • Watir: It is an open-source family of Ruby libraries for automating web browsers. It also enables connection to databases, reads files, export XML, and also structures the code as re-usable libraries.
    Mobile automation tools:
    • Appium: It supports Java, C#, Ruby, Python, JavaScript languages and it has an option for recording. Also, set up of Appium is very easy.
    • Calabash: It supports only Ruby language and it has two projects running in parallel i.e. ‘Calabash-Android’ and ‘Calabash-iOS’.
