Workspace as a Service: Minimizing BYOD Security Risks and Applying Best Practice
Workspace as a Service (WaaS) is a virtualized desktop that can be accessed at any time using either desktop or mobile devices. WaaS enables a business to provides employees access to business applications and data from any place, at any time.
WaaS can be implemented with dedicated infrastructure on-premise or it could be outsourced to a third party as a hosted solution. One advantage of WaaS is that the application and operating system software can be managed centrally, reducing the capital expenditure required to set up desktops. WaaS also offers a better solution for securing and tracking organizational data.
Concerns about the growing popularity of bringing your own device (BYOD) are driving some of the growth of the WaaS market. WaaS actually complements the use of BYOD by helping reduce security risks and ensuring that best practices are implemented and followed.
A report by Transparency Market Research estmiates that the WaaS market will reach $18.37 billion by 2022.
Brett Waldman, a former research manager at IDC, said that “despite many organizations looking to outsource virtual desktops today, the rise in mobility is actually transforming the demand as we speak, toward applications and data. It is this workspace that end users want to be able to access anywhere, anytime, anyplace — giving rise to … workspace as a service.”
