Cloud Computing and IaaS: Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure Are Clear Front-Runners
Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services delivers ten times the computing capacity of the next 14 cloud competitors combined (including Microsoft, Google and IBM), reports Gartner. AWS has more than a million customers and is expected to have $7.3 billion revenues for 2015, 81 percent growth over the past year.
AWS has always been the go-to platform for cloud-based startups, but now it’s not only small companies that are using it. Large businesses like General Electric, BMW and Capital One are all heavy users of AWS.
Mark S. Mahaney, RBC Capital Markets analyst, said that “AWS is no longer just for startups or just for technology companies but has infiltrated mainstream business models and we expect adoption to be very strong for the foreseeable future.”
Paul Miller, Forrester’s analyst, wrote that “The headline items (the Internet of Things, Business Intelligence, and a Snowball chucked straight at the ‘hell’ that is the enterprise data centre (think about it)) are much-discussed, but in many ways the more interesting stuff was AWS’ continued – quiet, methodical, inexorable – improvement of its current offerings. One by one, enterprise ‘reasons’ to avoid AWS or its public cloud competitors are being systematically demolished.”
