Cloud Computing: Enterprises Accelerate Move to Public Cloud
The trend to the cloud is accelerating, and many think that ultimately most enterprises will be running their operations in the equivalent of the public cloud. While many vendors are focusing now on the hybrid cloud, others think that many enterprises may just leapfrog to the public cloud.
In September, GE and Capital One, for example, announced that they are in the process of moving their complete datacenters to the public cloud. Chris Drumgoole, CIO at GE, said that “one hundred percent public cloud is still our goal… We’re on or slightly ahead of schedule with that march. It hasn’t been without pain, but almost none of the pain has been technical.”
Richard Villars, VP of data center and cloud market research at IDC, said that “we are seeing a very significant uptake in public cloud use across enterprises.”
Adrian Cockcroft, Technology Fellow at Battery Ventures, said that “it will be impossible to get security certification if you’re not running in the cloud because the tools designed for datacenters are sloppily put together and can’t offer the auditing for PCI and other regulators… Big enterprise has their gold plated, enterprise grade hardware, and all of their enterprise software support and there are huge bills there. With the cloud, this gets cleaned out, all of it, and replaced with open source software, commodity hardware, and those inherent savings, even with the re-engineering, is big. The difference in utilization alone, going from, for example, 10 percent to over 50 percent is how a lot of companies are thinking about this.”
