Enterprise Content Management (ECM): Vendor Disruption, Content Analytics and Cloud Top ECM Trends for 2016

By Dick Weisinger

An recent Ovum report looked at enterprise content management (ECM) trends to look for in 2016.  These included:

  • Disruption among major ECM vendors, especially for solution-based products
  • Increased use of content analytics
  • Records management and e-discovery to continue to be important for compliance and governance
  • Increased demand for better security of data, enabled by information rights management and encryption

Sue Clarke, a Senior Analyst at Ovum, said that “2016 promises to be an eventful year in the ECM market, with organizations having greater freedom to select a best-of-breed approach to implementation, flexible deployment models, and the availability of applications to help manage and protect content.”

A story by Search ContentManagement covered ECM trends for 2016 as seen by Forrester.  Forrester has many of the same expected trends on their list: increased use of cloud, need for security, analytics, and records management.

Cheryl McKinnon, Forrester Research analyst, said that “Many of the traditional [ECM] suites assembled technology over the years through acquisitions and it took a lot of time to really integrate and come up with a consistent user experience, and that’s where ECM has been kind of a struggle.  These next generation platforms, which are typically architecture cloud-first, provide an opportunity to kind of start from a clean slate.  They’re really focused on things like usability, reducing the number of clicks to perform key tasks, and they’ve got the data to back it up.”
