Industry 4.0: The Next Industrial Revolution: Big Data + Compute Power + Machine Intelligence

By Dick Weisinger

Industry 4.0 is how some describe the transformative effect that technology is having on manufacturing.

Daniel Pacthod, VP of McKinsey, said that “the next level of Industrial Revolution is soon approaching and technology is helping us reach that point seamlessly.  Unprecedented levels of data and ubiquitous connectivity throughout the supply chain will be key to driving the next industrial revolution.”

Pacthod identified three driving forces that will make this happen:

  • Computing Power that has increased more than one thousand times over just the last ten years
  • Big Data
  • Machine Intelligence that will match humans by 2029

By 2025, most factories will have the following characteristics:

  • Reductions in production waste
  • Optimized processes with advanced analytics
  • Both physical and digital designs will become data and analysis driven
