There once was a time when the major benefit of using the cloud was cost. The cloud introduced the idea of being able to buy services just like a utility, paying only for what you use.  The new cost structure was a welcome change for many businesses and led to early successes for the cloud.

But the cost of cloud services is increasingly becoming less important.  A recent survey by the analyst firm Clutch found that cost trailed behind seven other cloud benefits that companies say that they value even more.  Benefits like efficiency, security and flexibility all ranked high in the survey.  Nearly half of the organizations surveyed ranked efficiency as the top benefit that they get from the cloud.

David Linthicum, Senior Vice President at Cloud Technology Partners, said that “centralization provides agility and ultimately reduces costs. With the Cloud a company can add and delete workloads from as needed and allocate resources nearly instantaneously. The Cloud removes the latency inherent in many business processes.”

The Clutch survey also found that services from the following four cloud vendors are used by 83 percent of businesses:

  • Microsoft Azure (23%),
  • Amazon Web Services  (22%),
  • Google Cloud (21%),
  • IBM Cloud (17%)
