Internet of Things: Support for IoT Accelerates Growth in Related Market Sectors

By Dick Weisinger

Internet of Things (IoT) vendor revenues jumped 15 percent to $6.7 billion in the last quarter of 2015.  That’s according to a study by Technology Business Research (TBR) that tracked businesses that were active in IoT.  The businesses included in the report include Verizon, Microsoft, Intel, Google, Amazon, Siemens, Cisco, Ericsson and Oracle.

The report also found that interest and growth in the IoT sector has also influenced and accelerated growth in other related areas like cloud computing, IT services and Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure.  For example, cloud computing during that same quarter grew at an annual rate of 79 percent.

Dan Callahan, a TBR analyst, said that “effectively, every type of IT and operational technology (OT) vendor will have a stake in the growing commercial IoT market, as IoT solutions will drive increased use of diverse IT and OT products and services… In addition to building interest in established IT products, commercial IoT will create growth in specialized business consulting, hardware, network, development, management and security components.  IT and OT vendors that are quick to capture IoT opportunities within their current customer base, and attract new ones through developer programs and investing in growing mindshare, will enjoy additional, immediate, revenue opportunities.”
