Robotics: Manufacturers Deploy Robots to Automate their Supply Chains
Improved robotic technology and decreasing costs are making the use of robotics in the supply chain a very attractive option.
A survey from Deloitte of manufacturers found that just over half thought that robotics and automation would provide them future competitive advantage and would be disruptive for their industry. That is up from 39 percent from last year. About one-third of the respondents say that they’re already beginning to use robots today and that is expected to increase to nearly three-quarters of businesses over the next six to ten years.
Robots are becoming more sophisticated. Supply chain robots today are able to “see” packages, and based on type and size, make decisions for how to best pick up and move them. Current generation robots are significantly safer and are frequently deployed to work side by side humans. A report on robotics and the supply chain by MHI found that “in the past, safety barriers and sensors prohibited people from working too near the machines—creating a time-consuming process if someone noticed, for example, that a package was upside-down.”
The MHI report said that “while the vast majority of forwarders agree technology is the future of freight, they see many types of technology as overhyped. Warehouse robotics are the only innovation that a majority consider will have a profound impact on the industry.”
