Security: Visual Hacking Has 90 Percent Success Rate
Visual hacking is the use of confidential information seen on the screen or desktop of someone else, like a desktop, laptop or smartphone, for unauthorized use.
Visual hacking can be an easy an effective way to break into networks and systems even otherwise with high levels of security. One experiment conducted by Ponemon used the following three techniques to gain confidential information:
- Collect information left at unattended desks, monitors and screens
- Take confidential documents that were left unattended
- Use a smartphone camera to capture confidential information from a computer screen
In the experiment, visual hacking was successful more than 90 percent of the time, and the time to complete the visual hack took less than 15 minutes in half the cases.
Larry Ponemon, founder of the Ponemon Institute, said that “concealing a password might help solve part of the problem, but there is so much more information that can be visually hacked—hard copy documents, email contents, presentations and more. Preventing visual hacking requires a holistic security and privacy program designed to protect information from a range of threats.”
The Ponemon report concluded that “creating visual privacy policies and protocols is an important step in building awareness of the issue among employees. Companies should educate and train employees to properly handle company data. Issuing a clean desk policy, using privacy filters to help protect sensitive information displayed on screens, having a document shredding process, and setting up procedures that allow employees to report suspicious visual hacking behavior are other practices to lessen the chances for visual hacking. Organizations should perform regular, company-wide visual privacy audits to help identify and address vulnerabilities.”
