SaaS and Security: Closing the Security Gaps Brought on by the Public Cloud
Increasingly businesses are adopting cloud and SaaS tools that promote business agility. But the flip side of this benefit is that use of the cloud often bypasses standard corporate security. Gartner estimates that in five years that more than one quarter of all corporate data traffic will flow directly between users and cloud services, totally bypassing corporate security.
Craig Lawson, Gartner vice president, said that “creating and maintaining a security policy on a per-cloud-service basis is more than a chore when hundreds of cloud services are in use — it quickly becomes a high source of risk. The heart of the issue is that most organizations are moving to a relatively large ecosystem of cloud service providers, rather than a monoculture.”
Gartner recommends the following five steps for closing corporate cloud security gaps introduced with the use of public cloud applications:
- Use Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASB). CASB software acts as an intermediary between cloud service providers and cloud users. It ensures that security best practices and corporate security policies are enforced.
- Use threat protection and Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) tools. These tools can better cover cloud-based services.
- Use cloud services designed for your business needs. Security standards will better align with your organization needs with applications designed for your use case.
- Consider the use of third party security tools. Third-party tools can boost security of cloud services and SaaS applications.
- Be agile. IT can support enterprise agility by being able to change along with the direction of the business.
Although cloud is secure but they lie chances or loopholes in the process using cloud services. Using an identity as an Service Provider can definitely lower the risk of identity theft and cover a security gap.
