Internet of Things (IoT): Preparing for the Upcoming Onslaught of Network Device Connections
Globally 21 billion IoT devices will be connected to enterprise networks by 2020 according to Gartner. Gartner says that organizations need to prepare because there will be an ‘onslaught’ of IoT devices accessing corporate networks in just a short period of time. And with so many devices needing to access and sync data to the network, security of those networks need to be carefully reviewed.
Gartner recommends that companies prepare for IoT by doing the following:
- Organizations should begin identifying devices that access their network
- Organizations need to review and update their access policy to enable support of large numbers of IoT devices
Tim Zimmermann, research vice president at Gartner, said that “whether a video surveillance camera for a parking lot, a motion detector in a conference room or the HVAC for the entire building, it is necessary to be able to identify, secure and isolate all IoT devices — and in particular ‘headless’ devices. Many IoT devices will use the established bandwidth of the enterprise network provided by the IT organisation. However, it is important that the IT organisation works directly with facilities management (FM) and business units (BUs) to identify all devices and projects connected to the enterprise infrastructure and attaching to the network.”
