Enterprise Software: Idle Software Costing Businesses Billions
Businesses are losing billions of dollars on software they purchase but which goes unused, according to a survey by 1E.
The 1E report looked at software installed on 4.6 million devices and examined the regularity of use of the software installed on those machines. The report found the following applications to be the biggest offenders. These apps were frequently installed on machines but seldom used:
- Camtasia Studio (67 percent waste)
- SAP Crystal Reports (63 Percent)
- Adobe InDesign (55 percent)
- Adobe Dreamweaver (55 percent)
- Microsoft Visio (47 percent)
- Adobe Illustrator (47 percent)
- Microsoft Project (46 percent)
- Adobe Photoshop (42 percent)
The report grouped the businesses surveyed into 16 industries. Government had the lowest level of waste (28 percent), while aviation (47 percent) and education (47 percent) had the highest levels.
Often applications are installed on machines in order to simply be able to view documents created by someone else. In those cases, installation of a viewer application instead of the creator application would be significantly more cost efficient.
Peter Beruk, ITAM Subject Matter Expert at 1E, said that “all industries have a need for specialized software. An accounting firm will have the need for accounting software, while an engineering firm will have a greater need for CAD software.”
