Cyber Hacking: Ransomware Hackers Hit Manufacturing Hard
A report by Fortinet found that over just the seven months between October 2015 and April 2016 that there were 8.63 million hacking attacks made against just 59 manufacturers that were surveyed.
Not all of these attacks are ransomware, but the number of ransomware attacks in 2016 increased by more than 400 percent and manufacturing is the top target.
Across industries, according to Carbon Black, the ones seeing the most cases of ransomware are as follows:
- Manufacturing – 16 percent
- Utility/energy – 15.4 percent
- Technology companies – 12.6 percent
Raymond Kahre, director of marketing and programs for Sword & Shield Enterprise Security, said that “manufacturing companies are considered high-value targets to intruders interested in intellectual property and other proprietary information.”
In particular, because manufacturing businesses haven’t been heavily regulated like financial companies (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards and The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) and healthcare (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), they’ve had less incentive to invest in security.
Ralph Langner, co-founder of the Langner Group, said that “the risk is getting bigger and bigger because of the tighter digital integration. Here’s the problem: We are creating so many more cyber-physical interdependencies and at the same time we don’t spend enough effort to actually understand those cyber-physical interdependencies.”
Kasey Cross, director of product management at LightCyber, said that “in many ways, we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of the outcome of a network attack. Entire plants could be shut down or even ruined. Defects could be introduced to products that are not immediately discernible. A motivated attacker can get into any network today.”
