“Moore’s Law is slowing down,” says Urs Hölzle, Google’s senior vice president for technical infrastructure.  While developments like Quantum Computing might transfer Moore’s Law to a new generation of computing technology, that still is likely some time away.  Instead, in the meantime, Google is looking towards the cloud as performance gains in chips are slowing.

Prasad Sabada, a senior director of operations who oversees sourcing for Google’s data center hardware, said that “the slowdown in Moore’s law and the growth of cloud services has brought us to an inflection point. The game is changing again and we need the industry to respond in a meaningful way.”

Hölzle said  that “you can have a million customers who move to that new hardware platform not knowing they did. It’s much cheaper to insert new technology [in the cloud], and much faster.”
