Digital Transformation: It’s Great! But what is it?

By Dick Weisinger

Increasingly businesses are talking about how digital transformation will allow them to grow more quickly and be successful.  Most companies are in agreement with that.  But when asked exactly what is meant by ‘digital transformation’, there are no consistent answers.

Anand Eswaran, corporate vice president of Microsoft Services and Microsoft Digital, said “if you put 20 [executives] in a room and ask them to define ‘digital,’ you are guaranteed to get 20 different answers.”

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) survey looked at how businesses define digital. 30 percent said that digital refers to any kind of technical innovation. 29 percent said that digital is equivalent to the work IT does.  14 percent said that digital is about technology used in customer-facing technologies.  Another 14 percent said that digital has to do with the technology used to integrate the parts of the business.  Maybe “All of the Above” might be a good answer.

An Altimeter Group study tried to identify which things business are prioritizing as part of their effort to digitally transform themselves. The results were:

  • 80 percent – update websites, add social and mobile platforms
  • 71 percent – update ecommerce platform for mobile
  • 70 percent – update social, web, mobile, ecommerce investments to deliver an integrated customer experience.
