Big Data: A Monster Machine for Solving Monster-sized Data Problems

By Dick Weisinger

Perhaps part publicity stunt and part visionary pioneering, Hewlett Packard Enterprise  (HPE) recently showcased a server built with hardware that specifically targets Big Data.

It’s more than just a server prototype.  HPE is calling it “The Machine” and has equipped  it with 160 TB of memory spread across 40 nodes.  HPE CEO Meg Whitman, said that “the secrets to the next great scientific breakthrough, industry-changing innovation, or life-altering technology hide in plain sight behind the mountains of data we create every day. We can’t rely on the technologies of the past. We need a computer built for the Big Data era.”

Kirk Bresniker, chief architect of The Machine and a research fellow at HPE, said that “it’s an order of magnitude bigger than anyone else has done … no one’s ever built a unified memory subsystem at this capacity before. ”

The Machine was built with a focus on speed.  It uses light waves to transmit data instead of standard electrical data.  The use of light is expected to dramatically boost computing speeds.

Mark Potter, CTO at HPE, said that “we believe Memory-Driven Computing is the solution to move the technology industry forward in a way that can enable advancements across all aspects of society.”
