Kubernetes and the Cloud: Deploy and Scale of Containerized Applications
Kubernetes was one of the hottest open-source projects of 2017 and it is expected to grow even faster throughout 2018. Kubernetes was developed at Google and first released in June 2014. It is a platform for managing the automatic deployment and scaling of containerized applications across clusters of hosts. Many analysts at the end of last year predicted that Kubernetes would be adopted strongly in 2018. Major cloud platform providers have already accepted it, like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure.
Mark Pundsack, Head of Product at GitLab, said that “containers are a core pillar of DevOps, but in 2018 they will hit a tipping point where we’ll see more developers running containers in production on Kubernetes than not… In 2017, it became clear that more developers and enterprises are using Kubernetes in production to assist with container management. In 2018, this trend will continue to prosper.”
But adopting Kubernetes may not be easy. It is complicated, requires culture to change in order to be successful, and may be hard to configure to align with all business requirements. These difficulties are expected to drive the emergence of platforms and packaged Kubernetes solutions to make adoption easier.
Alex Polvi, CEO of CoreOS, said “So what’s next? As early adopters begin moving business-critical workloads onto production clusters, expect to see demand for more services built on top of Kubernetes. Infrastructure services like data stores, monitoring, and secrets management are already in demand. And we expect the catalog of these Kubernetes apps to grow rapidly as users recognize the advantage of having logging, configuration, and security centralized through the Kubernetes APIs.”
