Cloud Computing: Slow Migration of Enterprise Workloads to IaaS Cloud
This year the number of enterprises using public cloud services is expected to cross the 50 percent adoption mark, according to a report by Forrester. Enterprise adoption includes the use of cloud applications, platforms and services. The trend of moving to the cloud is one that seems unstoppable.
Dave Bartoletti, VP and principal analyst at Forrester, told Cynthia Harvey at Informationweek that the “most recent adoption data just came back, and 51% of global enterprises now rely on public cloud platforms — that’s infrastructure and platform as a service — and that’s the first time the number has ever broken 50%. [Public cloud adoption] has been growing by 10 percentage points per year for the last four years. There will be probably 20% to 25% compound annual growth rate for public cloud infrastructure platforms for at least the next two years through 2020, and it looks like it might be four years through 2022.”
Sunil Mehra, Vice President at Oracle India, said that “while previously cloud infrastructure adoption had been held back in some quarters by the perception that the move to IaaS is complex, 64 percent of experienced IaaS users stated the move was easier than they expected. Cloud is clearly the future, with cloud infrastructure enabling businesses to unlock value and fast-track innovation.”
