Data: Enterprises Shift Data from On-Premise to Cloud
Between 2017 and 2018, the database market size grew by 18.4 percent, according to Gartner. That’s big. But what’s bigger is what’s beneath the numbers: two-thirds of the growth came from the cloud.
Adam Ronthal, analyst at Gartner, said that “the message in our research is simple — on-premises is the new legacy. Cloud is the future. All organizations, big and small, will be using the cloud in increasing amounts.”
Gartner said to expect 75 percent of all databases to be deployed or migrated to the cloud by 2022. Ronthal wrote that “contemporary business initiatives, such as digital business transformation, require greater diversity of data and analytics capabilities, causing organizations to look to the cloud for flexibility and agility.”
Scott Harvey, vice president of Engineering at Atmosera, said that “moving to the cloud has the advantage being faster for an organization to increase and decrease the amount of hardware to scale instantly, versus having to order and install hardware on-premises. While past investments in on-premises hardware should typically be utilized, other factors including the administration burden for the infrastructure may entice an organization to move to a public cloud sooner than later.”
